A science-based policy for managing free-roaming cats

چکیده
Free-roaming domestic cats (i.e., that are owned or unowned and considered ‘at large’) globally distributed non-native species have marked impacts on biodiversity human health. Despite clear scientific evidence of these impacts, free-roaming either unmanaged managed using scientifically unsupported ineffective approaches (e.g., trap-neuter-release [TNR]) in many jurisdictions around the world. A critical first initiative for effective, science-driven management must be broader political legislative recognition as a non-native, invasive species. Designating is important developing implementing science-based plans, which should include efforts to prevent from becoming free-roaming, policies focused responsible pet ownership banning outdoor cat feeding, better enforcement existing laws. Using approach necessary responding effectively politically charged increasingly urgent issue managing populations.

Zoonotic diseases associated with free-roaming cats.
Free-roaming cat populations have been identified as a significant public health threat and are a source for several zoonotic diseases including rabies, toxoplasmosis, cutaneous larval migrans because of various nematode parasites, plague, tularemia and murine typhus. Several of these diseases are reported to cause mortality in humans and can cause other important health issues including aborti...

OBJECTIVES To describe the characteristics of unowned, free-roaming cats and their caretakers who participated in a trap-neuter-return (TNR) program and to determine the effect of the program on free-roaming cat colonies. DESIGN Prospective study. SAMPLE POPULATION 101 caretakers of 920 unowned, free-roaming cats in 132 colonies in north central Florida. RESULTS Most (85/101; 84%) caretak...

متن کاملEstimation of the dietary nutrient profile of free-roaming feral cats: possible implications for nutrition of domestic cats.
Cats are strict carnivores and in the wild rely on a diet solely based on animal tissues to meet their specific and unique nutritional requirements. Although the feeding ecology of cats in the wild has been well documented in the literature, there is no information on the precise nutrient profile to which the cat's metabolism has adapted. The present study aimed to derive the dietary nutrient p...
متن کاملA Generalized Population Monitoring Program to Inform the Management of Free-Roaming Cats
Management of freeroaming cats was once a matter of interest primarily to animal control departments, public health officials, wildlife biologists, and a small but dedicated corps of cat colony caretakers. Over the last two decades, however, advocates for feral cats have become increasingly well organized, their ranks have grown substantially, and they have developed “TNR” (trap-neuter-return) ...
